The expression “red-carpet treatment” entered the lexicon to describe how travelers on the 20th Century Limited were pampered upon boarding the train that whisked them in style between Chicago and New York.

In 1938, the train was refashioned into a sleek, muscular Art Deco masterpiece by Henry Dreyfuss, one of the nation’s leading designers, who later created the Princess phone.
