“Although the risks were not very high, these findings suggest that some people might be prone to coping with excess working hours by habits that are unhealthy, in this case by using alcohol above the recommended limits,” explains study author Marianna Virtanen, of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Helsinki. She later goes on to say, “With this type of study, you can never fully prove the cause and effect relationship.”
Virtanen led the team which collected data on more than 330,000 people in 14 countries. Their data describes that people who work longer hours seem to also have increased risk for excessive alcohol consumption (by eleven percent).
