A recent world habitat report suggests that global populations have been reduced by nearly half, on average, over the last 40 years. This is an alarming number considering that the data for this report was adjusted from a report published only two years ago; a report whose numbers did not appear quite so grim.

But sure enough, the latest statistic suggests that populations of many species from mammal to bird to reptile to amphibian to fish have all fallen by an average of 52 percent in four decades.
