Listeriosis, commonly called listeria, is an infection caused by eating Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Over the past few years, listeria has been responsible for dozens of food product recalls, numerous hospital visits and even deaths. In fact, according to the CDC, listeria causes 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths each year in the United States.
