LETTERS: Our readers discuss Maya Angelou, Republicans, city streets and our war dead

Most of us have been moved, and moved to tears today, by sharing tributes to Maya Angelou. I admit I never bothered to research her life. I have, however, been inspired by her quotes and the calmness that great inner strength radiates. Watching the evening news, I learned a few things about her. I intend on learning much more.

She was raped at age 7 by her mother’s boyfriend. Upon telling of it, the man was murdered by her uncle. She blamed her own voice for his death. She didn’t speak again until she was 13.
