Largest asteroid to ever strike Earth was powerful enough to blast rock into glass

Together they are more than twice as massive as the notorious Chicxulub asteroid impact crater under Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula—an impact so powerful it caused the extinction of the dinosaurs some 66 million years ago.

Buried 19 miles (30 kilometers) deep in Australian rock some 300 and 600 years old is evidence of a two huge underground domes—the imprint of a giant asteroid that likely broke into two pieces moments before impact and smashed into Earth with double devastating blows.
