BROOKLYN, NY — The first sounds we hear in director Robert Falls' staging of The Iceman Cometh (***1/2 out of four) are of men snoring. The assortment of lost souls who populate Eugene O'Neill's epic tragedy are strewn across the back room of Harry Hope's saloon and boarding house in various states of drunken torpor.

If the guys knew what lay ahead in the five acts that follow, they'd surely down a few more stiff ones and remain passed out for the duration of this production, which opened Thursday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
