Lafayette: Bird watchers among hundreds in East Bay-wide Christmas Bird Count

BERKELEY -- Steve Granholm padded lightly on the marshy banks just after dawn, ears attuned and eyes open. His auditory senses snared the distinctive pulse of an Anna's hummingbird, and he wrote that down. Moments later, he peered through his birding scope, which revealed the distinctive marks of a Red-Tailed hawk perched on a radio antennae a few hundreds yards away.

Another bird watcher darted onto the banks, reporting a sighting of the elusive American yellow warbler.
