Killing Godane, Chasing ISIS

The killing of Ahmed Abdi Godane, the co-founder of the Al Qaeda-allied Somali terrorist group the Shabaab, in an American airstrike, may help bolster President Barack Obama, who has lately seemed powerless to halt the jihadist mayhem spreading across the Middle East. The Administration apparently wanted to make sure it got it right: armed drones and manned aircraft had carried out the strike on Monday, but only on Friday did the Pentagon confirm that Godane was dead.

Godane had led the Shabaab as the group sought to impose an extreme form of sharia law in the areas it controlled inside Somalia–effectively, most of the hinterland. (The BBC has a good map.)
