By applying for a trademark on the ingenious phrases “This sick beat,” “Party like it’s 1989” and “Nice to meet you, where you been?” Taylor Swift has served notice that she will not allow anyone to rip off her insanely clever lyrics. This also applies to the phrases “Cause we never go out of style” and “Could show you incredible things!” If you want to put these phrases on a T-shirt or a shot glass, you will have to pay her.
Ms. Swift is following directly in the footsteps of Miami Heat general manager Pat Riley, who registered the term “three-peat” in the late 1980s when he was coaching the Los Angeles Lakers. Others have trademarked such phrases as “Man of the match” and “Let’s get ready to rumble.”
