Wake up at 5:49 (I have an OCD-ish aversion to even numbers). Before prepping school lunch for my daughter, I skim the first of Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales.” I have no interest in and little understanding of the material, but I feel it’ll provide an impressive start to my Journal piece.
Engage in daily breakfast bargaining with my 17-year-old daughter. “If you want coffee, you have to have something to eat.” Negotiations begin with my proposal of peanut-butter toast and orange juice and conclude with her agreeing to consume two almonds. Off to the school bus.
