John Cassavetes: An Appreciation

John Cassavetes, while primarily known to most of the public as a veteran character actor, left behind his greatest artistic legacy as an independent filmmaker with a unique voice and vision. This legacy was a small one unfortunately, with Cassavetes writing and directing only 11 films before his untimely death in 1989 at age 59. It pains one to think of the ground-breaking work Cassavetes could still be doing today, with the advent of technology such as 4K digital cameras, which would bring his cinema-verite-style films to life with even greater clarity.

In 2004, The Criterion Collection, regarded by cineastes the world over as the Rolls-Royce of DVD labels, meticulously restored and released five of Cassavetes' most renowned films in a box set entitled John Cassavetes: Five Films.
