JeffCo meteorologist optimistic that Birmingham could meet EPA-proposed stricter ozone standards

BIRMINGHAM - A downward trend in the amount of ozone in the Birmingham area means healthier lungs for residents, and the potential for the area to reach compliance with newly proposed stricter ozone standards, according to Jefferson County Department of Health meteorologist Matt Lacke.

The EPA proposed stricter standards for ozone on Wednesday. Under the proposal, the acceptable level of ozone would be reduced from 75 parts per billion to a range between 65 and 70 ppb. The EPA is taking comments on the proposed range for the next 90 days.
