Jeff Bridges’ long-gestating `The Giver' leaves you hungering 
for more

‘The Hunger Games,” “Divergent,” “The Rover,” “Snowpiercer,” now “The Giver” All this dystopia has given me dyspepsia. George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” set a high bar for these future-tense fables. The best of the recent films was Alfonso Cuaron’s 2006 entry “Children of Men,” based on a book by P.D. James. Now, we have “The Giver,” a film Jeff Bridges has been trying to make, originally with his father Lloyd in the title role, for decades.

Based on the 1993 novel by Lois Lowry, which predates “The Hunger Games” by about 15 years, “The Giver” begins in black-and-white some time after “the Ruin.” What was “the Ruin”?
