The 40-year-old American photojournalist had been missing since Nov. 22, 2012 after being abducted in Syria. The country has become notorious as the most dangerous for journalists. Dozens have been killed in Syria since 2011 and dozens others are missing. Foley went to the country despite being held captive in Libya in 2011 by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.
