'Into the Woods' not normal fairy tale

Rob Marshall reinvigorated the movie musical with his adaptation of “Chicago,” which would go on to win the 2002 Best Picture Oscar, as well as five additional statues. A dozen years later, he’s gone back to the well of Broadway for “Into the Woods,” a tremendously entertaining adaptation of Steven Sondheim’s musical. The film is, in some ways, more accessible than the stage version, which will make it easier for parents to bring their kids, even if some of the darkness of Sondheim’s original work is brightened in translation.

The musical itself, which actually had its world premiere here at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, is a mash-up of classic fairy tales tied together with an altogether unique take on the way we treat storytelling and the stories we think to be appropriate for children.
