Intermission: Billion dollars in an elevator

The integrity of the Golden Globes, the awards ceremony put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is constantly under attack as pandering and celebrity-obsessed. But from where I sit, the list of nominations that came out today has some pleasant surprises on it. So for those of you keeping score at home, I’d love to know: What awards for pop culture do you find meaningful, and why?

• “Pretty Hurts,” by Alex Pappademas: In a blockbuster of a column, Grantland’s pop music critic does a deep read of the photos of Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Solange Knowles exiting an elevator after an altercation and muses on female dominance of popular music.
