India’s Supreme Court Backs Free Speech Online

(Bloomberg) -- India’s Supreme Court struck down a law that allowed prosecution for online content deemed offensive, voiding a spate of arrests in the world’s largest democracy.

A two-judge panel ruled 66A of the Information Technology Act as “illegal and unconstitutional.” It retained provisions allowing the government to block online material and take action against websites that don’t accede to official requests to censor content.
