‘Incredibly powerful’ scene at Auschwitz

A crowd of more than 3,000, including 300 survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, gathered in Oswiecim, Poland, on Jan. 27 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the notorious Nazi death camp where more than 1 million were murdered before Soviet Red Army soldiers freed its prisoners in 1945. The ceremony was held at the entrance to Birkenau, with a large tent encircling the infamous gate and railroad tracks.

Ornstein and Moreland Hills native Justin Kadis, director of external relations at Krakow’s JCC, spoke to the Cleveland Jewish News about the atmosphere in Poland during the anniversary.
