Increase in whooping cough in preschoolers may be due to removal of booster jab

THE new whooping cough vaccine is wearing off early, leaving preschoolers no longer immune to the deadly disease and infecting fragile newborn babies.

The latest federal government Communicable Diseases Intelligence report says the increase in pertussis (whooping cough) cases among kids, aged six months to four years, could be due to the removal of the 18 month booster dose of the vaccine in 2003.
