Ice Bucket Challenge sweeps the nation

(NEWS CENTER) -- Jumping in a pool or sipping some lemonade are typical ways to cool off in the summer. But people across the nation are doing something a little different - tossing buckets of ice over their heads. The #IceBucketChallenge is not just a social media stunt, but started as a way to bring awareness to ALS.

The ALS Association said the challenge started with former Boston College player, Pete Frates. Frates was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, also known as Lou Gerhig's disease.
