Strengthening Hurricane Joaquin, which could become a major Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds by Friday, triggered hurricane warnings for the northern Bahama islands Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 30) and a hurricane watch may be required for parts of South and North Carolina as early as Thursday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center.
While differing forecast models raise questions about the East Coast threat, the National Hurricane Center warned that a major hurricane landfall now looks possible. The forecast indicates that the Nation's Capital could see tropical storm conditions on Monday.
