Hummingbirds Duel For The Love of A Damsel

They are miniscule and quick and seemingly defy the laws of physics. They dart from flower to flower, constantly feeding in order to maintain their ridiculously high metabolisms. They drink nectar through their long swords.

New research shows that hummingbirds use their long, saber-like beaks as dagger-like weapons. Males, specifically, will use them to fight off other males; and they will fight to the death, lunging at each other in mid-air, stabbing the other’s throat just to win the female.
