The Hubble Space Telescope has snapped rare pictures of bizarre, looped structures that are thought to be long tails of gas formed during a vicious merger between two galaxies. These objects were lit up by a blast of radiation from a quasar – the glowing and compact region that encompasses a super-massive dark hole at the center of a galaxy.
