Horace Silver, Jazz Musician and Pioneer of 'Hard Bop', Has Died

Horace Silver, a composer and pioneer of the jazz subgenre known as 'Hard Bop', died at his home in New Rochelle, N.Y. today. He was 85.

Silver was born in Connecticut in 1928, and began his career with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers in 1953, integrating blues and gospel into what was then the established genre of bebop.
