Hollywood’s history problem — and how to make sense of it

A lot of this year's critical darlings are based on true stories, but that doesn't mean their screenplays always match up with the historical record.

Indeed, four of the eight Oscar nominations for Best Picture are inspired by real events — namely “American Sniper,” “The Imitation Game,” “Selma,” and “The Theory of Everything” — meaning the actors portray people who lived, breathed and left a historical record of some sort.
