Health insurers including Aetna, Cigna and Anthem don’t support genetic testing

Medical experts have witnessed an increase in genetic testing among patients after Angelina Jolie shared about her decision to undergo preventive surgeries. Medical experts call it “Angelina Effect” as more number of women underwent double mastectomy and many are asking their doctor if they should also undergo genetic testing to ascertain their cancer risk. However, major health insurers have declined to cover the expense for the genetic testing.

Angelina Jolie announced recently that she underwent preventive surgery to remove her ovaries. Earlier, Jolie shared that she underwent double mastectomy to reduce her risk of cancer due to a mutation in BRCA1 gene.
