Hawaiian Woman Receives First Bionic Eye Transplant

A 72-year-old woman in Hawaii, whose Retinitis pimentosa brought upon blindness two years ago, has become the first person to undergo a procedure to implant a bionic eye to restore her vision.

RP is an inherited eye disease characterized by the progressive degeneration of rod photoreceptor cells in the retina, resulting in vision impairment. This four-hour procedure, then, can eventually restore at least partial vision to that eye.
