Have to see 'The Nutcracker' every year? This holiday, take your pick

Whoever heard of "The Nutcracker"? That was a legitimate question 60 years ago, when it was a relatively obscure and largely forgotten 19th-century ballet. But a couple of key revivals and a popular national television broadcast ignited fresh interest in ballet as an art form, with prominent regional companies springing up in its wake. Today, dance companies throughout America rely on an annual presentation of "The Nutcracker" to fill seats and coffers, giving young dancers their spotlight gig of the year and perhaps fueling them for explorations of what dance can do.
