The recent attack on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris was nothing short of a tragedy, and it was truly remarkable to see global leaders and citizens alike unite to demonstrate their support for France. If a month ago you pulled an American off the street, they undoubtedly couldn't tell you what Charlie Hebdo was. Today they could tell you all about what happened on January 7th. But could they do the same if you asked about Baga, Nigeria, and the events that occurred just days prior?
The sad truth is that 200 Nigerians were massacred by Boko Haram, another Islamist militant group, and nobody knows. Charlie Hebdo dominated the news cycle for days while Baga was barely an afterthought.
