From Handkerchief to Dress

While she paged through a tome on the history of textile design in her downtown Los Angeles office last April, Ms. Vincent’s imagination was caught by a photo of handkerchiefs in “Indiennes” prints—interpretations of Indian hand-painted cottons that were illegal in France and England in the 17th and 18th centuries.

“I love history and books so I tend to go there first,” says the designer, who is known for her feminine, wearable dresses.
