Gulf Stream System Slowing Down, Researchers Warn

Recently found evidences point towards a slowdown of the overturning and according to multiple lines of observation, in recent decades the current system has been weaker than ever before in the last century, or even in the last millennium. The Greenland ice-sheet melting is accelerating due to global warming and it is probably contributing majorly to the slowdown. The differences in the density of the ocean water drive the Atlantic overturning. The warm and hence lighter water from the south flows northwards, where the cold and thus heavier water sinks to deeper ocean layer and flows southwards.

In recent times, the cooling in the North Atlantic, just south of Greenland, has been found to be much stronger than the predictions of various computer simulations.
