Government sues Goodman over fire risk of AC, heating units

Goodman Co., the Houston-based maker of air conditioning and heating systems, agreed to pay the federal government a $5.5 million penalty to settle allegations that it delayed reporting fire hazards and misrepresented the extent of the problem in its air conditioners and heaters, authorities said Thursday.

The consent agreement resolves a lawsuit the government filed in federal court in Houston on Thursday. The suit accused Goodman of not promptly telling safety regulators about fire risks posed by the company's air conditioning and heating units and then hiding the extent of the problem.
