Government Program Provides Incentives for Companies to Develop Medications for Tropical Diseases, But Not Ebola

Developing expensive medications for the world’s poorest people isn’t exactly a feasible way of making money. However, the United States government has provided quite the incentive to those willing to make medications aimed at curing tropical diseases: Those companies will receive a voucher for a priority review of one of their products that can be applied to any particular drug that the company is producing.

In the event that a blockbuster medication is being developed by a drug company, it can be rush-reviewed and released to the public more quickly, resulting in a bigger profit for the drug company.
