Gov. McCrory names scientist as new leader for Department of Environment and Natural Resources

Donald van der Vaart, a deputy secretary and energy policy adviser in the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, has been promoted to secretary, the department's top leadership position, by Gov. Pat McCrory.

Van der Vaart has worked with N.C. DENR for more than 20 years, most recently as deputy secretary and energy policy adviser for the agency. He has previously held leadership roles for the N.C. Division of Air Quality and has been an adjunct professor in engineering at N.C. State University.
