Google’s Lunar XPrize is intended to encourage the best and brightest engineers and scientists to do something that no one have ever done before; in fact, nobody has ever even attempted to do this before: To land a private spacecraft on the moon which can travel at least an additional 500 meters, all the while collecting data and transmitting both high definition images and videos back to earth.

But these engineers and scientists will not have to do this alone. The “contest” provides seed money to help these teams develop their ideas into a workable model.
