GM fined $900 million over faulty ignition switches, admits misleading consumers

General Motors Co. will pay a $900-million fine to settle a federal criminal probe into why it failed to recall millions of defective vehicles equipped with a faulty ignition switch that has led to hundreds of deaths and injuries.

As part of the settlement, the automaker also signed a deferred-prosecution agreement to end a U.S. government investigation, the Department of Justice said Thursday.
