Glossy thriller ‘Gone Girl’ tries to have its cake and eat it, too

David Fincher’s “Gone Girl’’ is a glossy, empty and ultimately unsatisfying — if undeniably entertaining — movie about a writer (Ben Affleck) who becomes a murder suspect after his beautiful blond wife (Rosamund Pike) disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary.

Working from Gillian Flynn’s own adaptation of her best-selling novel, Fincher’s all over the place with a movie that tries, with varying degrees of success, to be a melodramatic thriller, a media satire and some sort of commentary on the state of marriage after the 2008 stock market crash.
