One of the most jarring announcements in the world of ecology is that giraffes are on their way to the Endangered Species list. It is surprising, to say the least because they are such odd and exotic creatures—especially to Americans—that many likely forget that they are as much at risk as any other species on the planet.
“Giraffes are everywhere. Look at kid’s books, which are full of giraffes,” says San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research coordinator David O’Connor. “They’re always in zoo collections too. They’re easily visible, so you don’t think that we have to worry about them.”
