Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia said he would veto a bill passed by the General Assembly that proposes protections for opponents of gay marriage, amid criticism that it discriminates against same-sex couples.

ATLANTA — In a striking defeat to religious conservatives, Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia said Monday that he would veto a bill intended to protect critics of same-sex marriage.
