Genome to Prevent Citrus Greening

The increase in the price of citrus fruits over the past few years is due to an invasive insect which causes a disease. The Asian citrus psyllid carries a bacterium that causes trees to produce bitter inedible fruit.

The disease, known as citrus greening, caused by the bacterium Huanglongbing (HLB) has infected almost 70% of citrus in Florida over the past few years. It reached California also in 2008.
