Gannett, the media company that owns USA TODAY and local newspapers and television stations across the country, said Tuesday it'll rename itself TEGNA, reflecting its future as a broadcasting and digital company that will shed publishing businesses.

TEGNA, which includes letters from the name Gannett, will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol TGNA when it completes spinning off the publishing unit by mid-year.
