‘Gambler’ remake pushes its luck

Karel Reisz’s “The Gambler,” a 1974 film based on a semi-autobiographical screenplay by young Harvard graduate James Toback, developed a cult following among cinephiles and filmmakers alike. One of its fans was Norman Mailer, and it helped launch Toback’s filmmaking career.

Toback has publicly voted against remaking the film, but Paramount went ahead anyway. The new film’s director is Englishman Rupert Wyatt (of the surprisingly good 2011 reboot “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), and this new “Gambler” was adapted by Dorchester-born, Academy Award winner William Monaha...
