Frenchman captured in Mali is released in apparent prisoner swap

ISTANBUL — A 50-year-old Frenchman who was snatched from his hotel room in Mali by al-Qaeda’s North African affiliate and held captive for more than three years has been released, apparently as part of a prisoner exchange, security officials said Tuesday.

“It’s a day of joy,” French President François Hollande said in a video posted on the government’s website.
