French right rises, Hollande flails after Nice attack

PARIS — Grieving together? Forget it. Unlike past violence in France, the Bastille Day attack on Nice didn’t inspire political solidarity — instead it sharpened the anger of government critics, fortified the hard right and made it even less plausible that Socialist President Francois Hollande will win re-election next year.

The attack is stirring up fear of immigrants, Muslims and today’s world order, echoing the anxieties that are driving many voters in the U.S. and Britain, and threatening to dig a deep and potentially explosive social divide.
