In France, after Charlie, free speech. Up to a point.

There are some things you cannot do “up to a point.” You either are or you aren’t. You cannot be on fire “up to a point.”

For some questions, the answer “up to a point” means something more like no. “Do we have the right to free speech?” “Up to a point.” Up to the point where you can face jail time for something you said? That feels close to “no.”
