Kai auditioned for the show at the suggestion of a friend at her peak weight of 265 pounds. In an interview with New York Post, she says she’d never seen the series, and didn’t know what she was in for. Turns out what she was in for was five to six hour workouts while eating far fewer than 1,000 calories. “There was no easing into it,” Kai says. “That doesn’t make for good TV. My feet were bleeding through my shoes for the first three weeks.” She collapsed during that first workout. “I thought I was going to die,” she says. “I couldn’t take any more.” That’s when her trainer yelled, “Get up!” and told her “you’re going to die, just like your mother.”

According to Kai, the trainers enjoyed contestants’ collapses, both mental and physical. “They’d get a sick pleasure out of it. They’d say, ‘It’s because you’re fat. Look at all the fat you have on you.’ And that was our fault, so this was our punishment.”
