Ford Motor's U.S. sales fell 5.9% in May, compared to a year earlier, as the auto industry's momentum cooled off for at least a month and low gasoline prices dented small-car sales.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based manufacturer reported sales of 235,997 units in May. That included a 6.4% decline for the namesake Ford brand and a 6.9% increase for the luxury Lincoln brand.
