A food safety expert says the contamination of frozen berries from China should serve as a call to action to the food industry to improve compliance with safety regulations.

Technology manager with Sydney University's newly-established Fresh Produce Safety Centre, Richard Bennett, says while hepatitis A contamination of food is rare, there have been recent instances of it in frozen berries in Scandinavia, Italy, Ireland and North America.
