Every year, the United States logs nearly 800,000 incidences of stroke. About three-quarters of these strokes occur in people who have never had one before.
This makes stroke an important study. And studying stroke, we now know that high blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk factor. Sure enough, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 8 in 10 first time strokes occur in patients with high blood pressure.
